Poppy Hills Golf Course

We had great weather for our September tournament at the iconic Poppy Hills Golf Course in the Del Monte Forest section of the 17 Mile Drive. The fog rolled in in puffs, challenging rangefinder devices, but by mid-way through most of the back nine, the sky cleared. The course was in mint condition with scenic tree lined fairways and very tough greens. The course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. calls it “the closest you can get to playing golf in a National Park". Poppy Hills was also recently included in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play.

We continued our 2020 trend of selling out our tournaments in this challenging Covid-19 year. Poppy Hills has a very unique Covid rules that only allows 2 carts per foursome. We thought this was going to be a challenge for our club, but over half of our 28 golfers chose to walk the beautiful course.

We received very positive feedback from our players on Poppy Hills and hope to add it to our tournament schedule for 2021. A number of players stayed in the Monterey Bay area for the weekend. We will investigate expanding to a 2-day tournament in the area next year, adding another of the area's beautiful courses. Overall, this was an enjoyable day of golf for all of the players.

We had a few golfers who met the challenge of the course with great rounds. Congratulations to Jose Espinoza who shot 80 to edge out Tim Ambrose's 82 and take first place Gross. David Banyard took 3rd place Gross over Rich Kenny in a card-off. Congratulations to Matt Cody whose 70 gave him Net first place, closely followed by Mike Berg and Harry Brunette.
