L&J The Jimmy & Bruce Memorial at Contra Costa
It was a spectacular day at Contra Costa C.C. on November 1 – sunny skies, 75 degrees and a light breeze. Some say our Bruce Cornelius did some persuasive negotiating with the one upstairs (“I don’t care if it’s November, it has to be perfect for my people!”). The course was in pristine condition, but perhaps the Superintendent didn’t get the memo with some of the extreme pin positions.
The course was challenging but Board Member, Tim Ambrose, tamed it with a hot putter. Tim took honors with both the low gross and net score (79/69) and will take home the giant Jimmy Naylor/Bruce Cornelius Trophy for low net. Mat Yamagata won the low gross prize and will also keep the Art Bridgett/Player of the Year Trophy for another year, skating to victory over Jeff Cobb, who also takes home hardware with the Art-Deco Match Play Trophy.

Thanks to Calvin Larson of Disco Law for providing the prizes for one of the CTP winners.
The round was followed by a sumptuous Prime Rib and Salmon dinner. MC Peter Mankin said a little about the 90-year history of the LJGA. Wine for every table was provided as a thank you to the members who played and supported the group throughout the year. We all raised our glasses in a toast to Bruce Cornelius, our departed long-time Board Member. After dessert and awarding of prizes, Peter revived the tradition of after-dinner joke telling. We hope to have more jokes ready for next year! The Board will be meeting over the next two months to put together another lineup of great courses for 2024. Stay tuned and see you next year!
